Eco Imprints: John Borg
John Borg is founder and owner of Eco Imprints, an eco-friendly marketing and promotional product company. He tells us about supporting values-driven companies and why he gets excited about green “schwag.”
How do you eco?
We offer values-driven companies a greener approach to promotional marketing and products that are less detrimental to the environment. Our merchandise and apparel is made from recycled, organic, sustainable or ethically-sourced materials. We research materials, printing methods, manufacturing processes and working conditions so our clients can make informed decisions about what products they put their logo on. We collaborate with manufacturers to make custom eco products and lobby our industry to offer better solutions that will help mainstream greener products, attitudes and consumption patterns.
Why did you go eco?
After operating an advertising agency for more than a decade, I found myself troubled by a lack of consciousness when it came to the environment — particularly with promotional products. About $19 billion is spent each year on giveaways or “schwag”. While this can be an effective way to build brand, the industry often abuses our planet and its people by pimping useless, toxic, sweatshop-made items that choke landfills. I saw a need to rethink this careless approach and was ready to put my career on a more fulfilling path. Eco Imprints aligns my professional skills with my personal values. We’re only at the start of this movement and there is much more to be done, but I am very proud of the product innovation and change we’ve helped inspire in a relatively short period.
